Week 1

Sunday, June 7

11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. — All-day session

11:00-11:15 a.m. – Gather at CUNY J-School, use 41st Street entrance

11:15 a.m. — Walk to Pier 83

12:00 p.m.– 2:30 p.m. — “Best of New York” Circle Line boat tour

3:00-3:30 p.m. — Back at CUNY J-School – brief orientation

3:30 p.m. — Class dismissed

4:00 -7 p.m. — Reception at The Towers: Dinosaur BBQ

 

Monday, June 8

9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. — All-day session

Welcome to Craft of Journalism Boot Camp

Instructors: Lisa Armstrong and Joanna Hernandez

9:30-9:50 a.m. – News quiz and news discussion

9:50-10:50 a.m. – Class discussion on diversity; exploring stereotypes and taking a deeper look at perceptions

10:50-11:00 a.m. – Break

11:00-12:00 p.m. – What is a story? Use our discussion on diversity to come up with story ideas

12:00-1:00 p.m. – Lunch

1:00-2:30 p.m. – Discussion: What is a lede? Then drill:  Man on the Street, interview at least 5 people to get quotes on an assigned topic

2:30-4 p.m. – Come back and write up a lede; class discussion, drawing out best practices; discuss successes, difficulties and solutions

4:00-4:30 p.m. – Day’s recap; debrief; look at tomorrow’s “split-shift” schedule

4:30 p.m. – Class dismissed

 

Tuesday, June 9

9:30-8:00 p.m. — “Split-Shift” (3-hour break between morning and afternoon sessions)

9:30-9:50 a.m. – News quiz and discussion

9:50 a.m.-1:00 p.m. — Webskills and WordPress

Instructor: Malik Singleton

Discussion on important digital media matters such as data visualization, online multimedia, advanced web search, analytics and SEO, digital copyright, plus Bootstrap and content management approaches in addition to WordPress

1:00-1:30 p.m. — CUNY J-School Library Access Explained

Instructor: Tinamarie Vella

Individual library access bar codes are distributed; resources and how to access them explained

1:30 p.m. — Class dismissed until 4:30 p.m.

4:30-5:00 p.m. — Debrief

5:00-8:00 p.m. — Photo basics

Wednesday, June 10

A-to-Z Smartphone Reporting

Instructor: Mo Krochmal

9:30-9:50 a.m. – News quiz and discussion

9:50-11:00 a.m. – Introduction: The emerging role of mobile in journalism; jobs; skills; storytelling

11:00-11:10 a.m. – Break

11:10 a.m.-12:10 p.m. – Equipment: Tech overview; accessories/hardware software apps; management

12:10-1:10 p.m. — Production: Photography: Shooting and editing; Audio: Capturing and editing; Video: Shooting and Editing; Writing: Caption writing and social media

1:10-2:00 p.m. – Lunch

2:00-3:30 p.m. – Street Reporting: Students pair off into teams to create a story pitch that will include interviews, narration and sequences; students then head out to report

3:30- 4 p.m. – Production: Students return to polish edit and publish their work

4:00-4:10 p.m. – Break

4:10-5:15 p.m. –Screening: Students introduce their work; share challenges and victories; and critique each other’s works

5:15-5:30 p.m. – Day’s recap; debriefing; and look at tomorrow

Critiques of daybook assignments; pitching, with drill (come up with story ideas); lesson that points out common grammar and punctuation misuses found in daybook assignments

1:00-2:00 p.m. — Lunch

2:00-4:00 p.m. — Digital Journalism

Instructor: Nicole Sanseverino

CBS digital journalist shares her story to illustrate the path to digital journalism; tips on having a successful internship; how to get a foot in the door; the good thing about knowing how to do everything from booking guests to one-man banding

4:00-4:30 p.m. — Debrief; go over again structure of rest of program; discussion on going out on first day of internships

4:30 p.m. — Class dismissed

Discussion on fast-pace of producing journalism; the challenges of earning a professional degree; tips on time management and pursuing a balance between journalism work and having a life.

Discussion on the latest social media tools and using them for innovative ways to tell stories.

1:00-3:00 p.m. — Working lunch

Viewing of documentaries; discussion on diversity and questions to ask in preparation of upcoming class Q&A with Soledad O’Brien

3:00-4:00 p.m. — Ethics and Journalism

Instructor: Lonnie Isabel

Frank discussion followed by question-and-answer session that focuses on ethical situations that journalists face

4:00-4:30 p.m. — Debriefing

Speaker: Soledad O’Brien answers Knight CUNYJ fellows’ questions about journalism, diversity and careers

Week 5

Monday, July 6

10:00-11:00 a.m. — How to Diversify Your Sources / the Importance of Diversity in Experts

2:oo-3:00 p.m. — Smartphone Reporting – touching base and giving feedback (video deadline moved to July 20; 250-word written report on “Problems Encountered and How I Overcame” due July 26)

Week 6

Monday, July 13

10:30 a.m. — Receive instructions and assignment for next week’s Career Services session (resumes being reworked, fellows provided job descriptions for cover letter assignment)Instructor: Yolanda Rodriguez

10:45 a.m. — Leave J-School to head to the New York Times

11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. — Meet with Rich Jones, Associate Editor. Tour of the New York Times newsroom and building (Pulitzer Hall, Page One meeting room, etc., followed by lunch in Times cafeteria)

1:30 p.m. — Head back to J-School

2:00-3:00 p.m. — Fairness/balance: Reporting on issues that could hit too close to home

12:30 p.m. — Head back to the J-School

1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. — End of program celebrations — buffet lunch in honor of Knight CUNYJ fellows; employers and mentors invited; certificates of achievement awarded

2:30-4:30 p.m. — Smartphone Reporting – The Show: Formal presentation of each fellow’s 2-minute smartphone story
